A bit about Halifax

Halifax, a West Yorkshire Town, is a part of Calderdale; the river Calder flows through our hills and valleys out past Sowerby Bridge, Luddendenfoot, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and beyond.  It was a cloth town, a market town famous for the Halifax Piece Hall, and of course, a chocolate factory, and the birth place of  the Halifax Building Society.  Halifax and its  surrounding villages and townships have a remarkable history, and its hill, valleys and the buildings that history has left for  us to enjoy are inspiring and well worth sharing.

The History

The history of Halifax is long, our Minster is 900 years old and the town has grown and adapted to the challenges it has faced.  The video below is a good introduction to the history of our town.  Enjoy.

History on Your Doorstep -- episode 5 of an 8-part history series first shown on BBC1 in 1982. This one is set in Halifax, UK, and deals with hidden clues to the town's industrial past. Presenter Fred Housego (Mastermind winner 1980) is joined by local historian Eric Webster.
